Is your new virtual guide to accompany you in your historical and cultural visit in order to give you a more entertaining and easy-to-use experience using augmented reality technology
What is Augmented Reality ?
Augmented reality is a digital technology that overlays any type of data content (text, images, video) over the image of the real world around us. Augmented reality provides all type of information such as location, heading, visual, audio and acceleration data, opening an avenue of new possibilities for interaction with the physical world. As such, AR provides a way to bridge the gap between the physical and digital experience, empowering users to better engage.
Author Lyman Frank Baum of the Wizard of Oz first mentioned it as early as 1901, but thanks to the spectacular progresses of the data processing, data storage, camera resolution of Smartphones as well as increase in bandwidth availability, Augmented Reality has nowadays become a reality.
How does it work ?
As we cannot see it directly through our own eyes, we need to use a camera that will capture the reality and a screen on which data content will be displayed. Today common Smartphones combine both apparatus, but in the near future users will be able to wear transparent googles with a camera and information will be displayed directly on the glasses. Users need hold the camera of the Smartphone in front of an object, picture, or a monument, anything that might be unique and recognizable. The AR application will recognize it and send back the associated content on the screen of the Smartphone.
